Small but powerful: carbon black pigments

It is well known that carbon black pigments provide a deep, rich black. But not all soot is the same: carbon black, i.e. industrial soot, has little in common with the undesirable by-product of incomplete combustion processes. Soot from smoking chimneys or from the exhaust systems of older cars differs significantly from the industrial soot or soot pigments produced under strict quality requirements.

The particles of carbon black can be extremely small and are often only a few nanometers in diameter. Depending on the size, the properties of the carbon black are influenced, which affects the colour strength as well as the conductivity and processability. The carbon black pigments have a high surface activity and absorption capacity for UV light. The smaller the particles, the deeper the black.

Features and benefits of carbon black

As they absorb light strongly, carbon black pigments are ideal for producing high-coverage paints, as well as for plastics and rubber products. Carbon black is used as a filler or reinforcement in the production of car tires, for example. Among other things, it increases abrasion resistance and improves the durability of tires. Thanks to its high electrical conductivity, carbon black is also often used in conductive coatings, but also in batteries and electronics. For outdoor applications, soot pigments are also a suitable additive because they effectively absorb UV light and protect against solar radiation.

Benefit from our industrial cast metal expertise

The diverse requirements of end applications have resulted in a wide range of Carbon Black specifications, which differ in particle size, shape and surface. Thanks to our many years of market knowledge and close cooperation with various manufacturers, we are able to offer you suitable products from all manufacturing processes in various forms of preparation.

Easy handling and excellent performance

The processing of carbon black has always been process-intensive, requires know-how and, above all, is dirt-intensive. Our water-based dispersions offer you easy handling and excellent product performance. Through intensive dispersion and additives tailored to your application, you get the best out of the pigments without having to invest a lot of time and effort. As a basis for our preparations, we use a wide range of carbon blacks.

How is carbon black made

There are now a huge number of Carbon Blacks, which differ in a variety of criteria depending on the requirements. While coloured cracks, for example, have the smallest possible primary particle size for a high colour depth and black number, antistatic finishing of materials requires the highest possible structure so that a carbon network can form in the matrix.

Soot pigments can be controlled

For this reason, various manufacturing processes have been developed which can be used to specifically adjust the parameters of the Carbon Blacks. The furnace process produces types of rubber and pigment soot — the particle size and structure can be controlled. The latter is not possible with the gas soot process; very finely divided pigment soots are produced. The oldest process for producing soot pigments is the flame soot process. It is barely possible to influence the particles.

Sustainable colour thanks to carbon black from rubber tires

At scholz, we value sustainability when it comes to colour. Carbon black can also be recovered from old rubber tires, for example. By recycling the soot pigments, the carbon black obtained in this way can then be reused. In this way, companies can live up to great environmental awareness with small particles and use recycled industrial carbon for further processing.

More colour pigments from scholz

In addition to Carbon Black, our others are powder pigments extremely high quality. As the complete opposite of black soot pigments, for example, our titanium dioxide provides for brilliant white. Even with iron oxide (Bayferrox) and many other pigments, we add colour to your product. Our pigments and pigment preparations provide the desired properties and achieve the best colour results for your company and your individual application. Let us advise you!
